Meltdowns during a photo session with kids
Worried about how a photo session with kids will go—especially when emotions run high?
Kids are unpredictable. One minute they’re giggling, the next they’re melting into a puddle of emotions. And when you’re heading into a documentary-style session, it’s totally normal to wonder if you’ll get any photos you actually love.
Zoë felt the same way while participating in Heartfelt Chapters, my year-long photography membership for spirited Edmonton families. Each month, we spent an hour together, documenting life as it naturally unfolded.
Out of the twelve sessions, two stood out as more stressful for her—lots of tears and big emotions. During those tougher hours, and even before seeing her gallery, Zoë worried there wouldn’t be enough good photos. But when she finally looked through them, she was thrilled—not only were there plenty of great images, but those two “meltdown” sessions became some of her favourites. She’s happy to have photos that show the chaotic, heartfelt moments of family life.
From my perspective behind the camera, I never felt like the tears took over the hour. For parents, those hard moments always feel longer than they actually are. In documentary photography, those moments aren’t deal-breakers — they’re just part of the story.
Emotions, just over two minutes long, is the second video in my Heartfelt Chapters series with Zoë. It shows a little bit of everything: a few tears, plenty of joy, simple everyday activities, and Zoë sharing how she felt both in the moment and when looking back at the whole year.
If you’re nervous about how your own kids might behave during a documentary photo session, this video is worth a watch. It’s a reminder that even on the more emotional days, there’s still so much beauty to be found, along with memories you’ll treasure forever.
