Year-in-the-life photography for Edmonton families | A look inside Heartfelt Chapters

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have your family photographed regularly over an entire year? Maybe you’ve heard the term year-in-the-life photography and thought, “Wow… that sounds cool… and also a little hectic.” If you’re in the Edmonton area and have been dreaming of having your family story documented in a natural, real-life way, you’re in the right place.

Over the past few years, I’ve had the joy of offering year-in-the-life photography Edmonton families can truly connect with. It’s an incredible way to preserve not just the big moments, but also the tiny, ordinary ones. Bedheads, snack negotiations, muddy boots, growth spurts, spontaneous hugs, and everything in between.

Why Edmonton families love year-in-the-life photography

One of those families was Zoë’s. She joined Heartfelt Chapters, my year-long photography membership created specifically for spirited Edmonton families who want their story captured as it naturally unfolds. Every month for an hour, I met Zoë and her crew—sometimes at home, sometimes at spots around the city that meant something to them, sometimes simply wherever life was happening that day.

Each month, I’d send Zoë her gallery and ask her to mark her favourites. At the end of the year, we sat down together to revisit those images. Twelve months of growth, chaos, tenderness, and honest family life. That’s the beauty of year-in-the-life photography Edmonton families rarely get to experience: the story becomes clearer the longer you look back.

Inside Heartfelt Chapters

At the end of the year, I sat down with Zoë for a longer, more in-depth interview about the whole Heartfelt Chapters experience. We talked about everything, from how it felt to be photographed every month, to what her kids and husband thought of it, to how she reacted each time she opened her new gallery. I asked her what surprised her, what exceeded her expectations, what she loved most, what she liked least, and why she’d recommend this experience to other families. From that conversation, I created a few short videos, each one centred on a different part of her story.

Growth is the first video in this Heartfelt Chapters series. In it, Zoë talks about what it was like to look back on a full year of images after being in front of my lens every single month in a relaxed, documentary style. During those 12 sessions, her life shifted from having two little ones to welcoming a third, and we captured it all: the wild, the tender, and the beautifully ordinary.

Watch this quick one-minute video to hear Zoë reflect on her experience—and to catch a small glimpse of the Heartfelt Chapters story we created together.
