Tofield family photographer

Karine, Andy and their three kids live on an acreage in Beaver County, Alberta. One morning, I drove from Sherwood Park to their property to act as their Tofield family photographer. When I arrived, the children were outside, ready to feed the chickens and dogs. They were also eager to catch frogs. Adopting amphibious pets is a common occurrence at their house. They usually release them after a while, or they will sometimes ask their parents if they can take them inside for the night to make sure they don’t get cold!

Each child has his or her own chores in the household. For breakfast, Kacie takes care of the eggs, Gabriel cooks with his mother and Callen sets the table. That morning was no exception. They prepared a great big meal with pancakes, scrambled eggs, toast and fruit. A real feast and one of the family’s favourite moments to be together!

After breakfast, the kids had to do their piano homework, something Karine enjoys doing with them on a regular basis. They have a nice old piano inherited from Andy’s grandmother and it gives her the chance to spend some individual time with each child.

The children were not too interested in their piano work that morning. They were rather excited to go and show me everything they could do outside! Living on an acreage, they love the outdoors and have lots of room to play. They have a nice big yard, a playground, a trampoline, a garden, a greenhouse…

Dad-friendly photo session

Andy doesn’t like to be photographed. The beauty of documentary family photography is that he didn’t have to sacrifice any time or pose during the session. He didn’t even have to pay attention to the camera. He just kept on doing his regular activities with the family, got to leave the house and do some errands and also mowed the lawn. He was still a part of the session and can be seen interacting with his family in many of the photos. I can guarantee his kids will be grateful for that later in life!
