New photography exhibition in Sherwood Park
I’m delighted to announce the inauguration of my latest photography exhibition, Reflections, at the beautiful Gallery@501 in Sherwood Park. Beginning on January 23, this two-person showcase features the vibrant painted portraits by Carol Wylie alongside my own collection of black and white Life in a Morning photographs.
My experience behind the scenes
In stark contrast to my previous exhibition at CAVA in Edmonton, setting up this edition of Life in a Morning at Gallery@501 was remarkably streamlined, thanks to the invaluable assistance of Kris Miller, the curator, and her proficient team. Kris’ expertise and meticulous approach were outstanding, underscoring her extensive experience in the field.
Gone are the days of vinyl letter-cutting marathons and wrestling with binder clips and fishing line! This time, I was prepared, having learned a lot from my initial experience. I’m grateful for the opportunity to set up my first exhibition, but I’m equally pleased that this time offered a completely different, smoother experience.
To display the photos on the walls, we opted for a more refined presentation using nails and magnets, resulting in a clean aesthetic that adds captivating dimension to the images.
No more sweating over installations for me this time—all I had to do was deliver the artwork, and Kris and her team worked their magic.
A photography exhibition worth visiting in Sherwood Park
When I first checked out the gallery after they had set it up, it blew me away! What a stunning exhibition!
Pairing my photos with the colourful portraits by Saskatchewan artist Carol Wylie was a stroke of genius. The contrast between her vivid work and my black and white images adds a whole new layer of interest.
And speaking of layers, I love how the thoughtful arrangement of different Life in a Morning image groups across the gallery walls enhances the overall visual experience.
An elevated visitor experience
Gallery@501 didn’t stop there—they added a couple of interactive elements to spice things up. At the entrance, you can learn about the art of portraits and browse through some interesting books on the subject. Then, as you wander through the gallery, you’ll stumble upon the Portrait Station. It’s wonderful! You can create two versions of your own self-portrait and decide whether to showcase them in the gallery or take them home. All of this adds a unique and engaging dimension to the exhibition. Kudos to the team for coming up with such a clever and fun addition!
Public reception
I strongly encourage you to visit the gallery. If you can make it, join us for the public reception on February 10 from 2 to 4 pm. You’ll have a chance to meet and talk with both Carol and me.
Circle that date on your calendar—February 10 is the day to be there!
