FAMILY: (UN)EXPECTED—documentary family photography exhibit in Arles

Oh my! I just looked at photos of the city of Arles in France, and I so wish I could be there right now! Not only is it a beautiful Provençal city that inspired many of Van Gogh’s paintings, it’s also currently hosting Les Rencontres d’Arles, the first international festival of photography. Founded in 1970, the festival welcomed more than 145,000 visitors in the summer of 2019.

Why the sudden interest in Arles?

My Morning Meeting photograph is part of the DFP Group Exhibition Family: (un)expected in the Off Arles Festival, from July 4 to 16, 2022.

About the Family: (un)expected photography exhibit

Family: (un)expected is the first in-person exhibition presented by Documentary Family Photographers Worldwide (DFP). It “presents diverse stories, unmasking the true everyday lives of family. The images question prevailing norms while resisting the social media propaganda of the universal ideas of the ‘perfect family.’ Instead, laid bare is the raw humanness that opens us up to the possibilities of being alive together. The expected is poised against the unexpected — exposing the usually hidden away real familial experiences of triumph, struggle, quietness, and chaos, providing further questioning of family life.”

The exhibition showcases 32 photos from 32 photographers, including three Canadians. It was curated by Jenna Shouldice, Ash Raddatz and four photography students from Advanced NMFA. I couldn’t thank them enough for selecting my photograph to be a part of the exhibit alongside so many other great images.

If you’re in Arles between July 4 and 16, stop by the exhibit at 58, rue du 4 Septembre. Otherwise, the photos on display are presented in a virtual gallery in the DFP gallery.

Here’s what the opening reception (vernissage) looked like on July 6. Can you spot my Morning Meeting photo?

Some words about the exhibit

I love this short conversation a friend and I had about the documentary family photography exhibit:

Talk about documentary family photography exhibit

Carole Saint-Cyr of Radio Cité also interviewed me about the People’s Choice Award I recently won with this photo and the Arles exhibit. It’s right this way (if you understand French)!

This is it, folks! I hope you enjoy Family: (un)expected.
