This is not a pretty photo

This is not a pretty photo, but it says so much about that stage of my life.

We often only think about taking photos of what we find pretty or what we love, but how often do you take photos of your messy house? Social media is full of curated and unrealistic representations of life, and I think there should be more of the real stuff. Don’t you agree?

This is one of the only photos I have of my “pumping station”, where I spent a minimum of 15 minutes after each feed to try to increase my milk supply to give breast milk to both of my babies when I couldn’t nurse them both. I wish I had photos of myself pumping in different situations, and photos of the many bottles waiting to be sterilized or drying on the kitchen counter…

This photo also shows what our “home decor” looked like at this stage of our life. Messy and full of baby items.

Each one of these items holds a special memory for me. There was a lot going on—feeding and keeping the babies happy were the main part of it.

  1. Plush toys that we still have many years later. One of them has become a favourite.
  2. Burp cloth
  3. Playpen
  4. Nursing cover
  5. Bouncy chair
  6. Activity gym. Oh the songs I sang around this little mat to make them smile!
  7. Swing used any time of day or night to calm the little ones down.
  8. Pillow and blankets for tired parents to get some rest.
  9. Tiny little love. Almost 3 months in that photo, yet smaller than most newborns. Pretty darn cute, right?
  10. Medela Breast pump. The beast! I never thought I’d use that when I was pregnant and I used it between 6 months to 1 year… Oh the things you do and how things change for your children!
  11. Carseat. Useful inside the house too… Kind of acted as another swing and they loved falling asleep in there. Yep, we used it for that even though it was not recommended. The kids turned out pretty fine if you want my opinion!
  12. Baby carrier used for so many occasions…

If these little details weren’t in the picture, I might not have remembered them. And yet, they were everything at the time.
