Motherhood project update
It’s about time I shared a little update on my motherhood project with you!
First of all, thank you so much for your patience. When I started this project, I knew it would unfold over time—but I had no idea just how much, or where it would lead me.
To recap: back in July 2024, I launched a questionnaire to gather stories and insights about motherhood. The response was incredible! Messages came in from nearly every continent. I’m still blown away. Thank you for being part of that.
With the guidance of my mentor, I refined the focus of the project and began conducting in-depth interviews that fall. Since then, I’ve completed 15 interviews and 11 photo sessions. I’ve gathered a lot of material!
I’ve listened to each interview multiple times. First to explore visual ideas, then to transcribe and really sit with what was shared. I’ve also taken breaks along the way, working around participants’ schedules, creating self-portraits for more sensitive themes, and simply giving myself space to step back and recharge. Taking that distance has been essential. It clears the mind, sparks new ideas, and brings the motivation back.
A new phase
Now that I’ve reviewed and analyzed everything I’ve collected, I’m preparing to move into the next phase of the project—one that will expand beyond photography into collage, mixed media, and installation.
Before I get there, I’m looking to connect with a few more groups of women:
- First-time pregnant women
- Recent first-time mothers
- Mothers of teenagers
- Mothers of young adults
- Recent first-time grandmothers
- Long-time grandmothers
These interviews may lead to photo sessions, but not always—it really depends on what emerges organically. At its core, the project continues to explore the many transformations women experience throughout motherhood: physical, emotional, psychological, social, and environmental.
Do you, or someone you know, fit one of these groups and feel like collaborating?
If so, I’d be so grateful if you could share this with others and fill out this short questionnaire to get things started.
